And the Mountain Echoed

The book And the Mountain Echoed is a novel by Afghan-American author Khaled Hosseini. It was Published in 2013 by Riverhead Books. it also won the Goodreads Choice Award in the category "Fiction" and was also awarded Paris Review Best of thae Best title in 2013.

The book starts with a fable told to Abdullah and pari by their father. it’s about a hard-working family who live in a small village. Once the div or demon came and asked for one kid of that family. Parents randomly choices whom they will give and unluckily their favourite one got selected. They gave him but it caused a depressive impact on the father. Then he decided that he will go to the div and ask him to return his child. The div showed how the kid had forgotten his parents and was happily playing in the garden. He further gave a choice to the father that either take the child or you won’t see him again. He unwillingly chooses not to see him again. The div gave him a drink which make him forgot that he ever had that son.

It’s a simple fable but has raised some question to me “HOW LONG SHOULD PARENTS GO TO PROTECT THEIR KIDS? IS LEAVING FAMILY A BETTER OPTION THAN SUFFERING FROM POVERTY?”

This book talks about the stories that is connected to each and speaks like a wheel. Starts from the mother who gave birth to pari and died and then the father married to a girl who is already full of guilt from her family betrayal. It also tells the effects after the family broke. The life paths of Abdullah, pari and their step brother Iqbal are differently unfair in this world.

It helped me to understand different bonds in my life. After this book I am able to understand my elder sister. My sister is compared to the character of Abdullah who could do anything for his sister pari. Pari Is the only reason of his smile.

It’s a excellent book and I would highly recommend it.
